The Best Heatless Curls Tutorial

Heatless curls have definitely been on my radar lately. Everything about them just sounds too good: beautiful curls while you sleep? The ability to still have romantic waves without frying your hair with the hot barrel of a curling iron? Sign me up!

But they’re also kind of elusive: so I am going to show you exactly how to make these strange looking style tools work to create beautiful, healthy-hair approved curls.

Let’s get started!

Curling Tools You’ll Need

Curling Instructions

  1. Start with Dry, Clean Hair: You want your hair to be mostly dry, not damp, and definitely not soaking wet. I recommend blow-drying your roots and letting your lengths air dry. You will use your spray bottle at the very end to lightly mist your hair to help set the shape. If your hair is clean and dry, you’re good to go!

  2. Apply Leave-In Conditioner (Optional): For extra hold and smoothness, apply a very small amount of leave-in conditioner or a lightweight mousse. This step is totally optional but can give your curls some extra definition when you shake your hair out in the morning. This will also help keep your hair moisturized, if you are struggling with dry hair that tends to break.

  3. Section Your Hair: Divide your hair into sections just like you are going to french braid your hair! The thicker your hair, the more sections you’ll need as you move down the curler. You can use your hair ties, clips or scrunchies to keep the sections separate.

  4. Wrap and Secure: Take each section and wrap it around your heatless curl rod. Starting at the front and top of your head, take alternating chunks of hair, wrapping the hair up and over the curler, almost like you are creating a french braid with your curler in the center of the braid. Make sure it’s snug but not too tight. Secure the ends with a silk scrunchie, taking care to wrap your ends facing the right direction so they don’t come out looking wonky and crimpy. Plus, you don’t want your hair to unravel overnight, so make sure you don’t skip the scunchie. Easy peasy!

  5. Spritz: Take your spray bottle and lightly mist your head, so that the top layer of your hair gets a layer of moisture to set your hair and allow it to start creating some memory while you sleep.

  6. Sleep on It: This is the best part—time to get your beauty sleep! If you want to protect your curls and avoid frizz, wrap your head in a silk or satin scarf. This will keep everything in place and reduce friction while you snooze.

  7. Unravel the Magic: Good morning, gorgeous! It’s time to reveal those beautiful curls. Gently start removing the heatless curler. Take your time to avoid pulling or tangling.

  8. Fluff and Style: Use your fingers or a curl  comb to gently separate and fluff your curls. Don’t use a brush, as it can make your curls frizzy. For extra volume, you can flip your head upside down and give your roots a little shake.

  9. Set Your Curls (Optional): If you want your curls to last all day, spritz a bit of light hairspray or a curl-enhancing spray. This will help keep your curls defined and bouncy.

Extra Tips

  • Practice Makes Perfect: The first time might not be perfect, but don’t get discouraged. You’ll get the hang of it!

  • Experiment with Sections: Try different section sizes to see what kind of curls you like best—tighter curls or loose waves.

  • Keep it Cozy: Use a silk or satin pillowcase to keep your curls intact and reduce frizz while you sleep.

And there you have it—gorgeous, romantic curls without any heat damage! Now you’re ready to rock those beautiful curls all day long. Have fun and enjoy your fabulous hair!
